Three Chimneys One Vision: Catalonia’s Iconic Power-Plant Reborn as a Blue-Green Media Hub

Catalonia’s Tres Xemeneies (“Three Chimneys”) power station dominated Barcelona’s skyline for half a century. Today, a major urban regeneration project will transform the degraded industrial area into a vibrant seafront with 10 hectares of green areas, a large urban park, more than 1,700 homes (40% affordable), and new spaces for creative industries and economic activity. Anchoring Catalunya Media City, this €450 million public-private venture will weave digital-media studios, clean-tech incubators, and waterfront parks into the site’s industrial heritage, honouring its working-class memory while combining soil remediation, turbine-hall reuse, and net-zero retrofits. ULI Spain joins the design team to shape governance, ESG metrics, and social-impact finance, echoing ULI’s C-Change guidelines on transition risk and green infrastructure partnerships.
